Jesus wept, that's a difficult one. Of all the millions of photos out there of concerts, how can I choose? How can I even choose which band to start with? What kind of insane question is this?
I can show you the best picture that I personally have taken. As you can see, it is shit, but that's because I was jumping up and down and am also not a photographer, although I have tried to sharpen it up a bit.

It's Jaime Preciado, the bassist from Pierce The Veil, during the BESTGIGOFMYLIFE. I don't remember what song they were playing when I took this, but it was probably a good one 'cause they all are.

That was a really good gig, though. When Vic did I'm Low On Gas And You Need A Jacket, he stopped and the whole crowd sang the last half of the song in perfect harmony and everything, it was beautiful. As such, here is that song (although I think this is the original, not the acoustic version - either is good):

Your Favourite Bassist (Day 5 of 30)

Tough, tough, tough one, bassists hold a special place in my heart. However, for this one I picked Jaime (Hi-me) Preciado of Pierce The Veil, because not only is he an awesome bassist, he's also an awesome guy, and when I met them I gave him my letter and he smiled at me, and I had a mild heart attack.

As happens nowadays, when I do a gig review, I will be posting it on the website Louder Than War, but I'll give you the link so you can read it - feedback is always welcome.

PIERCE THE VEIL BONANZA

I will be writing a proper post for Louder Than War, but this is my harebrained fangirly experience of today.

So last night, as you might have noticed, I was very excited because I was seeing Pierce The Veil today, and also potentially getting into a signing they were doing in the Pulp branch in the Arndale in town. That meant I was too excited to sleep for more than two and a half hours, before getting up at 5:30 in the morning so I could be in town on time. I made it into the queue for a wristband - they were giving out the last 25 that morning and I was 17th I think - and I got it, and I was all over the place. My heartrate was at about 90 bpm.

PIERCE THE VEIL EXCITEMENT

I'm seeing Pierce The Veil tomorrow, for the second time. They're my favourite active band. I am more excited about this than I was about Bring Me The Horizon, and I was pretty fucking excited about that. I'm trying to work out if they're giving out more wristbands for the signing in Pulp tomorrow, because if they are, I'm getting up at 5am and fighting off all the other fangirls. The first time I saw them was the first concert where I was able to actually go mental instead of dithering in a corner. As such, to try and turn this into something more productive than me squealing and weeing myself a bit in anticipation, I'm going to show you my top ten songs by the band, just in case you've never heard them and were wondering just why I'm getting so worked up.

10) Yeah Boy And Doll Face
For a lot of these songs, I'm not sure exactly what it is that makes me like them so much, and it's the same with this one. I think it's the lyrics, though - I don't know what Vic's said they're about, but they sound quite like the feeling of being betrayed when someone dumps you, and dealing with trying to decide if you still love the person or loathe them.

9) I'm Low On Gas And You Need A Jacket
Again, I don't know, but I really like the way Vic sings the line "Fuck, what, am I supposed to be impressed?"

8) Besitos
It sort of signifies my committing to them as a band. Selfish Machines was the first album that I got hold of, and this is the opening track, so this is like the music over the opening credits to the film that is me sat there in the corner weeping at their brilliance. Also, that awesome guitar bit at the start. I take my hat off to you, Tony Perry.

7) The New National Anthem
I really like the slow tinkly start, and the way that the singing sounds a little bit sinister - to me at least - and then it just breaks down into music that makes me want to throw things at the houses of people who've annoyed me.

6) Bulls In The Bronx
Because everything in this song is so bad-ass. The drums, the guitar, the bass, the singing, it's all so lfjnhdslfhasdjfhalkdhfal. And at the end, when he goes "and you're about to miss everything", and it all goes crazy, it's wonderful.

5) Caraphernelia (feat. Jeremy McKinnon)
This was maybe the second song of theirs that I heard when I was checking them out, and it's so awesome. You just put it on and stamp about and shout things, and just get really angry for a bit.

4) The Balcony Scene
It took me a while to find this one, because it's tucked away near the end of their first album, and I was so caught up with Selfish Machines and Collide With The Sky that it took me a while to realise I needed to go back and properly re-listen to A Flair For The Dramatic. It's so beautiful, though, and I feel like it doesn't get the appreciation off fans that it deserves.

3) Currents Convulsive
The . . . .the guitar at the start . . . the guitar all the way through . . . . the screaming . . . "You better listen to you doctor, doctors lie, lie, lie, lie!" ugggghhhhhhhhhhhhhh

2) Hold On Till May (feat. Lindsey Stamey)
It's so very obviously 'save your life'-ey, but it still works so amazingly well. It sounds so lonely at the beginning, and then at the chorus it sounds like those songs you have on your headphones when you're on the motorway at night and you're looking out of the window pretending you're in a music video. Plus, it articulates a lot of things that I find difficult to say for myself.

1) Bulletproof Love
I DON'T EVEN KNOW, BUT I JUST LOVE IT. I love it so much. It's so catchy and over-emotional, and it sounds really cheesy, but apparently Vic said it's actually supposed to sound like a suicide note you'd leave for your lover to find, so it's actually pretty dark as well. Here's the video:

The Deranged Hermit Student Exercise Playlist

Picture this. The sun is shining brightly outside, and the sky is clear for once. Kids run past, screaming wildly and kicking footballs. It's probably pretty warm out, even in the slight breeze.
But you wouldn't know. You're not outside. You're sat inside, on the sofa, where you've been since you got up at mid-day for nearly six hours straight. You haven't washed. You've given up on the usual Western traditional eating times and are eating meals that would look weird, even to the average pothead. Your pupils are dilated from sitting in half-darkness, staring at a screen and writing notes, or more likely drafting blog posts to keep you from actually getting anything done. You're refusing to pay attention to anything, lest you give in to the voice in your head that says you're definitely going to fail your exam tomorrow because you don't have enough examples of Judicial Reviews in action, and, to be honest, you don't even know what that is in the first place.
You need a break. A break from the procrastinating, a break from the sitting and stewing. You need to get something else done so that you use up enough energy to sleep tonight instead of sitting reading until 5 am. Hopefully this will help a bit.

Happy 100th Post!

I am celebrating this because, not only is it an anniversary, it's a testament to my concentration. There's very little I can keep up with that takes as much effort as this blog does, so I'm pretty pleased with myself. So, to celebrate, we're having an internet party. To have a party, you need music. Because it's my party, we're having my music. I was going to do my top 100 songs ever, but that would just be me linking you to the My Chemical Romance back catalogue. I want to be a bit fairer than that, and also stick to something I'm actually capable of finishing. So what I'm doing here for our little party is an A to Z (zed, not zee, we're British here) of artists, and an awesome song by each. Not necessarily my favourite song, because you see enough of those, but other songs they've done that I also think are great. That way it's fair on the bands, and we get a little bit of variety in here. I'll also stick them in a youtube playlist if, for some bizarre reason, you want to hear them all at once.

A - All Time Low - Remembering Sunday
I'm still sort of going through the initial 'wow' phase of liking All Time Low, so I haven't settled on a favourite song yet, but at the moment I'm really liking this one. I'm learning it on guitar, too.

B - Bring Me The Horizon - Hospital For Souls
One of the best tracks off Sempiternal. You'd be able to feel the flames even if they weren't mentioned in the chorus.

C - The Cribs - I'm A Realist
I just really love the guitars in this, and the lyrics. Yeah . . .

D - Deaf Havana - Nicotine And Alcohol Saved My Life
This is the first song by Deaf Havana that I heard, and it's the song that convinced me to keep listening.

E - Evanescence - Bring Me To Life
Everybody knows this one. I remember seeing this one all the time on MTV when I was about seven. It also belongs on the soundtrack to my youth.

F - Fall Out Boy - Grand Theft Autumn (Where Is Your Boy)
It's such an emo song, but it's also awesome, and one of my favourites by the band.

G - Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc.
This was my favourite song from the age of about 9 until I discovered My Chemical Romance. Although apparently the bass is actually synth (broke my heart), still . . . baaasssss . . .

H- Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi
Because we needed a bit of J-rock in this playlist.

I - Imagine Dragons - Radioactive
I was struggling to find an artist for this letter, but I really like this song, so there you go.

J - Jay-Z & Linkin Park - Big Pimpin'/Papercut
I am just marvelling that this actually works, and why this happened in the first place.

K - The Killers - Mr Brightside
I don't even know why I'm writing an explanation for this one, because it really doesn't need any. Everybody loves this song. Everything loves this song. Play it in a laboratory and use an electron microscope, you'll see viruses dancing and singing along. It is science.

L - Lostalone - Do You Get What You Pray For?
This song is so badasssss, I remember why I was listening to them all the time last year.

M - My Chemical Romance - The Kids From Yesterday
I couldn't really decide for this one, because I love every single MCR track. But I decided this one because it was a perfect ending song to Danger Days, the prologue that is Vampire Money notwithstanding, and seeing as Danger Days was the last proper album of new material that they released, a perfect end to their career as a band.

N - New Order - Blue Monday
I don't even know.

O - Of Mice And Men - They Don't Call It The South For Nothing
I SAID I'D FIGHT BACK. I DIDN'T SAY THAT I'D FIGHT FAIR.

P - Pierce The Veil - Currents Convulsive
Most people forget about the other songs on A Flair For The Dramatic because of Chemical Kids . . . and Yeah Boy . . . but this track's possibly my favourite on the whole album, and really needs more attention from people.

Q - Queens Of The Stone Age - Lost Art Of Keeping A Secret
I don't listen to QOTSA much, but I like this one. It's the guitars at the beginning.

R - Rise Against - Make It Stop (September's Children)
The song's awesome, and the video is really emotive about bullying. It makes me want to hunt people down and fight them.

S - Sleeping With Sirens - With Ears To See And Eyes To Hear

T - Taking Back Sunday - Make Damn Sure
One of the first TBS songs I heard, while I was working in this shop, and it's what made me look them up properly.

U - The Used - The Bird And The Worm
I just love the contrast between the creepy little verses and the massive chorus.

V - The Vaccines - Post Break-Up Sex
I dunno, man, I just like this one.

W - Without A Face - Republicratic Gang
This was another difficult one, because all of WAF's songs are great. But I've put this one because it's off his amazing Oh, Great, An Election EP, which came before the even better American Scheme album. It's the first I've seen of WAF suddenly getting very cynical and political, and he does it very well. The video's also great.

X - Xiaolin Showdown Theme
Not going to lie, I struggled to find anything for X, but then I remembered this, and really . . . it's my favourite thing beginning with X.

Y - You Me At Six - Crash
I'd heard other You Me At Six songs before this, but this is the one that really got me into them. There's so much emotion in it.

Z - The Zutons - Valerie
We wouldn't have the Amy Winehouse version if it wasn't for this, and the original's not that bad anyway.

Heavy Music For Small Children

So about a year or two ago, I made my little sister Lily a mix CD to try and introduce her to the kind of music I like. I don't remember what was on it specifically, but it obviously involved a bit of My Chemical Romance, The Blackout and Good Charlotte because I was listening to them at the time. I'm thinking that, now I know Lily likes My Chem, it's time to ease her further into the weird milkshake of pop punk, alt rock and metal that is my musical taste. If I teach her nothing else, it will be which bands are good. Here's my selection. Please excuse my lack of commentary; I took a nap in the daytime because I barely slept last night and school made me run like a mile this afternoon, so now I'm really confused and I feel like I might throw up. Just producing a post is my priority here.

Why I Love Pierce The Veil

Well, first of all, who are they?
Pierce The Veil are my favourite active band. I found them through Youtube last August when I heard King For A Day (featuring Kellin Quinn of Sleeping With Sirens) and went mental. They're Vic and Mike Fuentes, Jaime Preciado and Tony Perry, and they make post-hardcore music, according to Wikipedia. Really, if it's a band I like, you can be almost certain that 'post hardcore' is going to pop up somewhere.

But why do I like them? Well firstly because their songs sound great. Even before you get onto lyrics, purely on how they sound alone, so many of the songs are amazing-sounding, especially on their first album A Flair For The Dramatic, which has an amazing mix between twinkly little delicate bits, piano and then BANG MASSIVE GUITARS AND SHIT. It really is a very beautiful-sounding first album, especially The Balcony Scene and Currents Convulsive.

Lyrically they're brilliant as well. I love a good song lyric, and the ones Pierce The Veil come up with are wonderful. They tend to be quite literal, especially if you know the context - for instance "She sits up high, surrounded by the sun/One million branches and she loves every one/Mom and Dad, did you search for me?/I've been up here so long, I'm going crazy," in the song Hold On Till May off their most recent album, Collide With The Sky, is referring to a friend of Vic's who was neglected by her parents to the point that she would climb nearby trees and wait for them to notice she was missing - and very honest and cleverly written. It's not so much clever plays on words and stuff like you'd expect with a band like Fall Out Boy; PTV are more no-nonsense, getting-right-down-to-it kind of people with lyrics. But that's good when you need something to express yourself with. There's no ambiguity in what each song's about, either you can tell, or you can relate it to a very specific part of your own life.
Take Caraphernelia, for example - fans trying to invent some kind of lovelorn meaning for the title aside (it's just a word-like sound with no real meaning) - it doesn't mess you about. It's got Jeremy McKinnon from A Day To Remember in the chorus, screaming "What if I can't forget you? I'll burn your name into my throat, I'll be the fire that'll catch you?" followed by Vic's, "What's so good about picking up the pieces?" Best break-up song I've ever heard, and it's very therapeutic to stamp about your bedroom to, as well.

I also love their dedication to the fans, and how much stuff actually matters to them. Most fans who've done their research know about this one. Olivia Penpraze. She was an Australian girl, and a Pierce The Veil fan. Last year, however, after a long history of bullying and various other problems, she killed herself (honestly, the people who think it's ok to tell people they're better off dead sicken me more than anything else). When Pierce The Veil found out, it led to the creation of the song Bulls In The Bronx.
At concerts, Vic tends to ask at some point if music has ever saved anyone's life. As you can imagine, the crowd goes crazy. It saved Vic, too; he had a history of self-harm, but got himself together and now is an inspiration to many.

Songs For Dark Times

I wasn't really feeling like posting today. I just kind of wanted to tune everything out, turn the thoughts in my head into white noise and then just sleep for a few days, y'know? But the thing is that I committed myself to doing this properly, to show that I can keep doing it. It's also really not a good idea to just lie there thinking about how bad you feel, it's just a vicious cycle of self-hatred. So I thought; "why not do something productive with this? There's loads of people out there who feel like this, and we can maybe do a little bit to help them pass the time."
I will do this in the form of music. Music for when you feel like there's nothing there, or when you feel like everything's there and it's stampeding in through your eyes and ears and stabbing your brain and it's too much. Music to make you feel better, or at least to give you some respite from feeling at all, without resorting to unhealthy methods. Or at least, that's what I hope it'll do. It's going to start off pretty dark, anyway.
I'll give you fair warning; this is going to contain My Chemical Romance songs.

Echo & The Bunnymen - The Killing Moon
I don't know why I want to start with this one really. I suppose it just kind of sets the mood. Very gloomy, but also sparkly, which is good.

My Chemical Romance - I Never Told You What I Do For A Living
It's a song that I really under-appreciated for a while, because it's the very last song on the Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge album. But I really love it. It's just all this blood and anger, it's like a murderous rampage - and it's got awesome lyrics; "Another knife in my hands, a stain that never comes off the sheets, clean me off, I'm so dirty babe, it ain't the money and it sure as hell ain't just for the fame, it's for the bodies I claim and lose". Gerard's vocals are so distressed and raw on this, I just jf;lfja;ldjfa;ljfasdl

The Blackout - Hard Slammin'
I have this habit of skipping most of the songs on an album, so it took me ages before I found this one - I think it crept up on me while I was listening to my iPod one day. I am very glad that this happened, because this is an amazing song and really makes me wish I knew how to scream (pretty much all of Sean Smith's vocals make me wish I knew how to scream really, he's amazing at it). Plus I love the breakdown bit in the middle, with erm . . . with the screaming. Yeah.

Gorillaz - On Melancholy Hill
Time for a little respite from the furious songs from before; a bit of time to get your breath back and just releeeaasseeee the tensssioonnnn. It's working on me, at least. This is a brilliant song, as all Gorillaz songs are (I have yet to meet a person who doesn't like Gorillaz). It's sort of a bit sad, but also really chilled and a little bit romantic, lyrics-wise. And also, you think that maybe the manatee is a metaphor for something in the lyrics, but then the video's like ". . . no, there's a big hill and it's got a fuckin' huge manatee on it".

Pierce The Veil - Hold On Till May (feat. Lindsey Stamey)
I have a lot of love for this song. It's pulled me back from some bad places on quite a lot of occasions, not only because it sounds so beautiful, but it actually means something. Vic's said in the past that it's about a friend of his who was neglected by her parents, so to see if they cared she used to do crazy stuff like climbing really high up trees to see how long it took them to notice she was gone, and it stayed with her for life. You may not have been neglected by your parents, but you can feel abandoned by a lot of different people. I like it because of the sort of dialogue part; "If I were you, I'd put that away - see you're just wasted and thinking about the past again, darling you'll be ok." "If you were me, you'd do the same. 'Cause I can't take any more, I'll draw the shades and close the door, everything's not alright, and I would rather . . .". It's not just doing the 'it gets better routine', it's speaking from the other side as well, the hurt and confused side.

My Chemical Romance - Famous Last Words
Skip this one if you're still a bit sore. I am, too, but I think what we need to remember here is that, like they said, the message of the band lives on. They saved your lives before, and they can do it again. Just listen to the message in the songs. That's why I love this one. It's not cheerful, by any means, it's written from inside a very dark place. But it's still defiant. It's that feeling of down-but-not-out, that as hurt and dark and shitty as you may feel, it's not over and you will go out kicking and screaming if you have to.

Suicide Silence - You Only Live Once
THIS IS THE TRUE FUCKING MEANING OF YOLO.
Get back into fighting mode, thrash about to this, it's amazing and it makes me swear very loudly. Despite what you might think because of your preconcieved notions about bands with names like 'Suicide Silence', this is actually a pretty motivational song - "Live life hard, you only get one shot, so shoot!" - with the most amazing start I have ever heard in my life. Plus, there is the message of the singer, the late legend Mitch Lucker himself; "Keep listening to music, 'cause it gets you through everything, I promise". So there you go. You only live once, so just go fucking nuts.

Sleeping With Sirens - Do It Now, Remember It Later
It's a nice happy/angry song (I like angry songs) about doing . . . whatever you want, screw the consequences and screw the opinions of others, because you should do what makes you happy, regardless of what other people think is cool (unless you're hurting someone without their prior consent or taking advantage of someone). Get up and dance and sing, bitches.

My Chemical Romance - Save Yourself, I'll Hold Them Back
I Don't Even Care It's My Blog And If I Want To Post Loads Of MCR I Can (Stop Typing With Your Arse Because I Don't Care About Your Shitty Opinions). That's Fall Out Boy's next song, and I co-wrote it. Anyway, I love this one because it's all rock'n'roll and shouty and get-out-of-my-way-I've-got-a-laser-gun-and-I'm-wearing-rainbow-pants. See what an improvement it's made? An hour ago I was seeing in black and white, except mostly black.

So that's my attempt to try and make you feel better if you're feeling low. It's worked on me, definitely. It might not make you feel on top of the world, but I hope it at least gives you a short rest from the inside of your head.

I was originally wary of festivals, because I didn't like live music or fields. I'm still not a massive fan of fields, but there are now band that I like enough that I would go without washing properly for. I am quite willing to go and do the festival thing, especially since everyone keeps going 'oh my god you're young this is the time to do it it's the time to go running round in the mud in your vest and knickers' and all that. I have been to one festival. Fuji Rock Festival 2010. I have the t-shirt and towel to prove it. It was pretty awesome, and the first time I saw Muse and The Cribs live. The downside was that it was in the mountains of Naeba. In Japan. The Japanese are very friendly, but when you're 14 and it's raining so hard your shoes grip more to the ground than your feet (the amount of times I had to go back for my shoes 'cause they'd come off is ridiculous) and the only person you can actually hold a conversation with is your mum, who appears to have caught the Black Death from a really inflamed insect bite . . . kind of dampens your mood a bit. It's time, though, to try again with people who are much less friendly and organised, in a country with even worse weather.

So this blog is essentially a sort of project. I've been told that apparently I need to know more about handling social media, which is partly being corrected by this blog, and partly by my twitter, although twitter's not a preferred platform of mine because of the bastard 140 character limit.
The idea of this was to pick a subject and blog about it. One subject that I have a lot to say about is music. I am all over music, all over it like a powerful moss.

This, however, is a little introduction to me; the person behind the blog.
My name's Izzy, I'm currently 17 and I live in the north of England. I have various interests, including foreign languages - I'm studying German and Spanish at AS level (*coughshowoffcough*); reading, especially fiction and especially stuff where everyone dies very painfully; writing, of a similar nature to the stuff I like to read, but lacking in skill and plot; drawing with varying degrees of success (I draw a lot of band fan art, which may end up on here because it's kind of relevant); and, most pertinently to this blog, music. I'm learning guitar verrrry verrrrrry slowly, but I am progressing. I have, however, sworn never to take part in guitar douchery (loudly proclaiming that you can play guitar while in a public place and proceeding to play Wonderwall to the swoons of adoring girls completely lacking in musical knowledge).

I like a lot of bands. I mean a lot. There's so many bands that I like now that it takes me a couple of days to remember them all because I'll forget about six of them each time. Also, when I say 'I like bands', that's a bit of an understatement as well; I get so excited about some bands that I listen to that I have been driven to tears in the past. Just so you know what kind of blog you're getting into, and because I love lists, below is an actual list of the bands that I love the most.

My Chemical Romance, Pierce The Veil, Fall Out Boy, Sleeping With Sirens, Of Mice And Men, Panic! At The Disco, Without A Face, Rise Against, You Me At Six, Blink 182, Green Day, The Blackout, Cancer Bats, Slipknot, The Cure, The Smiths, The Cribs, Leathermouth . . . I am now panicking slightly because I know I've forgotten some of them and I can't remember which ones. Just so you know, my absolute favourites are My Chemical Romance and Pierce The Veil. I will actually eat your face off you while you're still alive for the opportunity to meet them (that may quite accurately sum up my blog title).

This blog will be about a range of things within the world of music. Songs and albums I like, why I like them, new bands and artists I'm listening to, issues within the world of music and such - anything that I believe is relevant and I can be bothered to write.
